What Time Will Zhou Yi Play Against Chun-Hsin Tseng?
Yi and Tseng are on the Day 2 Schedule at Chengdu Open 2024 on Thursday 19 September 2024. Lets breakdown the career, past stats and recent form of these players and predict who will get the victory.
Who Will Win In This Head-To-Head?
[WC] Zhou Yi (CHN) will face Chun-Hsin Tseng (TPE) in their first meeting. Zhou, who is currently 19 years old, holds a world ranking of 531 and has reached a career-high of 505 in August 2024. He has a 2024 Davis Cup record of 2-1 and will be making his debut at the Chengdu tournament. Some of his notable achievements include earning his first ATP Rankings point in February 2023 and making his tour-level debut at the 2023 Davis Cup and 2023 Zhuhai. He has also captured titles in the M15 Tianjin and M25 Tianjin tournaments.
In his Challenger debut in 2023, Zhou reached the quarterfinals at Zhuhai where he defeated Rai and Sekulic, even saving three match points. During his time on the ITF Juniors circuit, he had a record of 98-31 and reached the semifinals of the Australian Open and the quarterfinals of the US Open in boys’ singles. Zhou initially aspired to be a professional badminton player and started playing tennis at the age of 10 at the encouragement of his uncle. Despite being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at 14, he persevered and continued his tennis training.
It’s worth noting that Zhou is seeking his first ATP Tour win, having previously won both his tour-level matches in Davis Cup play. He has faced losses against Garin at the 2023 Zhuhai and Davidovich Fokina at the 2023 Beijing, and is hoping to secure the biggest win of his career. If successful, he would become the second-youngest match winner at the Chengdu event, following Auger-Aliassime who made the 2018 quarterfinals at the age of 18.
In terms of historical rankings, Zhou would be the lowest-ranked match winner at the Chengdu
tournament if he emerges victorious. Previously, Philip Sekulic, ranked 325, had defeated Nuno Borges, ranked 88, in 2023. Additionally, Wu Di, ranked 193, defeated Konstantin Kravchuk, ranked 96, in 2016. Finally, in 2018, Felix Auger-Aliassime, ranked 147, claimed victories over Wu Yibing, ranked 423, and Hyeon Chung, ranked 23, in the first and second rounds, respectively.
On the other hand, Chun-Hsin Tseng, who is currently 23 years old, holds a world ranking of 121 and has achieved a career-high ranking of 83 in August 2022. He reached the Top 100 in June 2022 and qualified for the 2022 Next Gen ATP Finals. Tseng made his Grand Slam debut as a wildcard entry at the 2022 Australian Open and also qualified for the 2022 Roland Garros. His first ATP Tour win came at the 2022 Los Cabos where he defeated Chappell, after having earned five tour-level wins in Davis Cup play for Chinese Taipei.
In terms of Challenger titles, Tseng won his first at the 2021 Maia-2 and followed it up with titles at Bengaluru and Murcia in 2022, without dropping a set in the latter two tournaments. As a junior, he ended the 2018 season as the World No. 1 after a remarkable performance in Grand Slam boys’ singles matches, securing a spot in the final of the Australian Open and winning titles at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, while reaching the semifinals of the US Open.
Coming into Chengdu, Tseng is aiming for his first hard-court tour-level win since defeating Shevchenko in the ATP Masters 1000 Shanghai 1R last October. He made his ATP Tour debut as a wildcard entry in Chengdu in 2018, where he was defeated by Fritz in the first round.
