What Time Will Thiago Monteiro Play Against Chun-Hsin Tseng?
Monteiro and Tseng are on the Day 3 Schedule at Rio Open Presented By Claro 2025 on Wednesday 19 February 2025. Lets breakdown the career, past stats and recent form of these players and predict who will get the victory.
Who Will Win In This Head-To-Head?
Thiago Monteiro and Chun-Hsin Tseng will be facing each other for the first time at the tour-level. However, they did meet before in the Genoa Challenger where Monteiro emerged victorious with a score of 6-2, 6-1 on clay.
Thiago Monteiro, 30 years old, is currently ranked 99th in the world. He reached his career-high ranking of 61 after a successful run in 2022 Challengers, where he had an 18-6 record and claimed titles in Salzburg and Genoa. Monteiro’s notable achievements include reaching the 3rd round of ATP Masters 1000 in Madrid 2024, defeating the 7th-ranked Stefanos Tsitsipas in the 2nd round. He also reached the 4th round in Rome 2024. In his ATP Tour debut at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro, he defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, marking his first win against a top 10 player. He also reached his first ATP Tour semifinal in 2018 Quito, defeating Gael Monfils. Monteiro ended a 7-match losing streak at Grand Slams by reaching the 3rd round of the 2020 Roland Garros. In his junior career, he had an impressive 86-33 record, including wins over Nick Kyrgios and Lucas Pouille in 2011 Grade 1 tournaments.
It is worth noting that Monteiro is looking to reach his 17th ATP Tour quarterfinal, with 11 of those being in South America. He is the last Brazilian player remaining in the Rio tournament. Monteiro previously reached two of his three ATP 500 quarterfinals in Rio de Janeiro, in 2017 and 2024, as well as one in Hamburg in 2018 where he lost to Kovalik.
Chun-Hsin Tseng, 23 years old, currently holds the 125th position in the world rankings. He achieved his career-high ranking of 83 in August 2022 and qualified for the 2022 Next Gen ATP Finals. Tseng earned his first ranking point at the age of 15 in November 2016 and broke into the Top 100 in June 2022. He made his Grand Slam debut as a wild card entry at the 2022 Australian Open and later qualified for the 2022 Roland Garros. Tseng secured his first ATP Tour win at the 2022 Los Cabos by defeating Chappell after earning 5 tour-level wins in Davis Cup play for Chinese Taipei. He won his first Challenger title in 2021 at Maia-2, dropping only one set during the tournament. In 2022, Tseng went on to claim titles in Bengaluru and Murcia Challengers without losing a single set. As a junior player, he ended the 2018 season as the world’s number one junior, with an impressive record of 21 wins and 2 losses in Grand Slam boys’ singles matches, including a runner-up finish at the Australian Open and titles at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
Tseng aims to reach his second ATP Tour quarterfinal, which would be his first above the ATP 250 level. Previously, he made it to the quarterfinals of Umag in 2024, where he lost to Mensik. If Tseng succeeds in reaching the quarterfinals in Rio, he will become the second player representing Chinese Taipei to achieve this feat at the ATP 500 level, following in the footsteps of Lu at the 2007 Memphis and 2015 Beijing tournaments.
The match between Monteiro and Tseng will take place on Quadra 1.
