Viktoriya Tomova is making her second appearance at the Tokyo tournament. She previously reached the second round in 2019 as a qualifier, where she lost to eventual champion Naomi Osaka when the tournament was temporarily held in Osaka. In the first round of this year’s tournament, Tomova defeated defending champion Veronika Kudermetova, avenging her quarterfinal loss to Kudermetova in Seoul last month. Tomova has a challenging record against Top 20 players, with only one win out of eighteen matches. Her first Top 20 win came against No. 18 Ekaterina Alexandrova at the 2024 Roland Garros. Her best career tour-level results on a hard court were quarterfinal appearances at Hobart and Seoul earlier this season. Tomova is the only player from Bulgaria in this week’s main draw. She is currently ranked No. 49, with her ranking at No. 99 at this time last year. She reached a career-high of No. 46 this summer. During this year’s Asian swing, she made it to the quarterfinals in Seoul, the second round in Beijing, and the second round in Wuhan. She lost in the first round in Osaka to eventual champion Lamens. Today, Tomova will face Diana Shnaider in the second round.
