However, he did not have a successful run in Houston in 2024, losing in the first round.
Michelsen’s breakthrough came in August 2024 when he entered the Top 50 rankings. He achieved his career-high ranking shortly after defeating former finalist Tsitsipas, reaching his first Grand Slam 4th round at the Australian Open. In the same tournament, he became the youngest American man to reach the 3rd round of a Grand Slam since Young in the 2007 US Open.
Highlights of Michelsen’s career include earning his first ATP Tour win and reaching his first quarterfinal, semifinal, and final at the 2023 Newport. This achievement made him the youngest American ATP Tour finalist since Fritz in the 2016 Memphis tournament. He also had a strong showing at the 2024 Los Cabos, defeating No. 9 de Minaur for his biggest career win. However, he missed out on a semifinal spot after squandering three match points against eventual champion Thompson in the quarterfinals. Additionally, Michelsen reached the doubles final at the 2024 ATP Masters 1000 Cincinnati, partnering with McDonald.
It is worth noting that Michelsen played his first tour-level match on clay at the same venue last year, losing to Purcell in the first round. Tien’s rise in the rankings started in August 2024 when he entered the Top 200. He continued to progress, breaking into the Top 100 in January 2025. Tien’s biggest career win came at the 2025 Acapulco, defeating No. 2 Zverev en route to the quarterfinals, which marked his best performance in an ATP Tour event.
An impressive achievement for Tien was his qualification for the 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals. In the round-robin stage, he defeated the top three seeds, including No. 2 Michelsen, to become the first left-handed finalist in the history of the event.
Tien had a remarkable winning streak from May to July 2024, winning 28 consecutive matches. During this period, he captured several ITF Tour titles, including two M15 San Diego titles, M15 Rancho Santa Fe, M15 Lakewood, and his biggest career title, the first Challenger title in Bloomfield Hills.
Tien has received wild cards for the 2022 and 2023 US Open after winning the USTA Boys’ 18s National Championships in those respective years. He also earned a wild card for the 2024 US Open by winning the US Open Wild Card Challenge. In his junior career, Tien reached a peak ranking of No. 4 and notably reached the finals of the 2023 Australian Open and US Open, losing to Blockx and Fonseca, respectively. He did, however, win the Australian Open boys’ doubles title with C. Williams by defeating Blockx/Fonseca.
This match will be Tien’s first ATP Tour appearance on clay. He will be aiming to secure his first win since reaching the quarterfinals in Acapulco, where he lost to Machac. If Tien wins, he will become the youngest match winner in Houston since Paul in 2016, who won his first-round match against Lorenzi but lost to H. Chung in the second round. Tien has a record of 6-4 against top 50 players since August.
