Fonseca achieved his biggest career win in the 2025 Australian Open, defeating number 9 Rublev in the first round as a qualifier. This made him the youngest man to defeat a Top 10 player at the Australian Open in the history of the PIF ATP Rankings. He also had a strong performance in the 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals, going undefeated and winning the championship. Fonseca became the first South American champion at the event and joined Alcaraz and Sinner as the only 18-year-old champions in the history of the tournament.
In his hometown of Rio de Janeiro, Fonseca had his first ATP Tour win by defeating Fils in the first round of the 2024 tournament. He also defeated the 2020 champion Garin in the second round, becoming the youngest Brazilian quarter-finalist in the Open Era. Fonseca had success in junior Grand Slam tournaments as well, winning the 2023 US Open boysโ singles event and reaching the quarter-finals in the Australian Open, Roland Garros, and Wimbledon earlier that season.
Fonseca is playing in his first ATP Tour event on clay since his win over Michelsen at the 2024 Madrid Masters, where he recorded his first ATP Masters 1000 win. He has a 3-1 record against Top 50 players since December, with wins over number 48 Mensik, number 20 Fils en route to the Next Gen ATP Finals title, and number 9 Rublev in the Australian Open first round last month.
If Fonseca wins his upcoming match in Buenos Aires, he will join the list of youngest match winners in the tournamentโs history, with Richard Gasquet, Jose Acasuso, and Rafael Nadal being the youngest players to achieve this feat.
