What Time Will Lorenzo Sonego Play Against Botic van de Zandschulp?
Sonego and Zandschulp are on the Day 1 Schedule at Open Provence 2025 on Monday 10 February 2025. Lets breakdown the career, past stats and recent form of these players and predict who will get the victory.
Who Will Win In This Head-To-Head?
Lorenzo Sonego (ITA) and Botic van de Zandschulp (NED) will be facing each other for the first time at the tour-level. However, they have previously met in the qualifying round of the ATP Masters 1000 Paris tournament in France. Sonego won that match with a scoreline of 6-3, 5-7, 7-5.
Lorenzo Sonego, who is 29 years old, is currently ranked No. 35 in the world. He reached his career-high ranking of No. 21 in 2021 after having an outstanding year. In 2021, he won a personal-best of 30 matches and also claimed the Cagliari titles, becoming the first Italian champion in singles since 2006 and in doubles since 2005 (with Vavassori). Sonego had a breakthrough moment in 2019 when he saved a championship point against Kecmanovic and won his first ATP Tour title at the Antalya tournament. He continued his success in 2025 by reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, defeating former champion Wawrinka and the 2024 Next Gen ATP finalists Fonseca and Tien. This made him the oldest Italian quarter-finalist since 1970. Sonego also won his third singles title at the 2022 Metz tournament, where he did not drop a set and defeated former champions Simon and Hurkacz. In addition, he caused a major upset by defeating world No.1 Djokovic in the 2020 Vienna semi-finals, becoming the first lucky loser to defeat Djokovic and conceding the fewest games to him in a match. He also saved a match point against Thiem in the 2021 ATP Masters 1000 Rome semi-finals, becoming the first Italian semi-finalist at Foro Italico since 2007.
Sonego currently holds an impressive streak of eight consecutive wins against players ranked outside the top 50, including wins in ATP Tour qualifying matches. This streak began after his loss to Shapovalov, who was ranked No. 102 at the time, in the ATP Masters 1000 Shanghai tournament. Sonego is making his debut in Marseille but has previously won an indoor title in France at the 2022 Metz tournament, where he defeated Bublik.

Botic van de Zandschulp, also 29 years old, is currently ranked No. 85 in the world. He experienced an impressive rise in rankings in 2022, achieving a new career-high ranking 14 times and peaking at No. 22 in August. He also ended the season as the top-ranked Dutchman for the second consecutive year. Van de Zandschulp made history at the 2021 US Open by becoming the third men’s qualifier in the Open Era to reach the quarter-finals. He also became the first Dutchman since 2004 to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final and was the only player to take a set off the eventual champion, Medvedev. In 2024, he had notable victories over Alcaraz in the second round of the US Open, which was the biggest win of his career, and Nadal in the Davis Cup Finals, which marked the end of Nadal’s career and helped the Netherlands advance to their first Davis Cup final in history. Van de Zandschulp had impressive runs at the Munich tournament, where he upset Ruud, ranked No. 7 at the time, to reach his first ATP Tour final in 2022. He also defeated Fritz, ranked No. 10 at the time, to reach his second final in 2023. However, he narrowly missed out on winning the title in both instances, squandering four championship points in 2023 and losing to Rune. In terms of Grand Slam qualifications, he performed well in 2021 by winning 11 out of 12 matches and qualifying for the Australian Open, Roland Garros, and US Open. He also entered Wimbledon as a lucky loser but was defeated by Trungelliti in the third round of qualifications.
It is worth noting that van de Zandschulp is aiming to secure his first win of 2025 and his first win since defeating Nadal and Altmaier to help the Netherlands reach their first Davis Cup final. However, he has struggled against top-ranked players, holding a record of 5-22 against players ranked in the top 50 since the beginning of the 2024 season, including his victory over Alcaraz at the US Open.
My Conclusion / Prediction:
My pick is that Sonego will win.
