What Time Will Pablo Carreno Busta Play Against Jakub Mensik?
Busta and Mensik are on the Day 2 Schedule at Asb Classic 2025 on Tuesday 7 January 2025. Lets breakdown the career, past stats and recent form of these players and predict who will get the victory.
Who Will Win In This Head-To-Head?
Pablo Carreno Busta, a 33-year-old Spanish tennis player ranked 184th in the world, with a career-high ranking of 10th, has achieved success in both singles and doubles. He has won a total of 7 singles and 4 doubles titles throughout his career. In 2017, he achieved his career-high ranking of 10th in singles and 16th in doubles.
One of Carreno Busta’s notable achievements was winning the 2022 Montreal championship, making him the 15th different Spaniard to win an ATP Masters 1000 title since the series began in 1990. He had impressive victories against Novak Djokovic, the number 1 ranked player, and Daniil Medvedev, the number 2 ranked player, en route to winning the bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (held in 2021).
Carreno Busta has also had success in Grand Slam tournaments, reaching the semifinals of the US Open and the quarterfinals of the Roland Garros in both 2017 and 2020. In addition, he reached the doubles final of the 2016 US Open with his compatriot Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
He has represented Spain in team competitions as well, being a member of the 2019 Davis Cup championship team. He also helped Team Spain reach the ATP Cup finals in 2020 and 2022, with impressive performances in doubles.
In this tournament, Carreno Busta initially lost in the first qualifying round to Bergs, but he entered the draw as a Lucky Loser (LL) following Muller’s withdrawal. He is aiming to secure his first top 50 win since defeating Thompson, who was ranked 29th, in the Davis Cup Group Stage in September.
His opponent, Jakub Mensik, is a 19-year-old Czech tennis player ranked 49th in the world, with a career-high ranking of 48th. Mensik made a breakthrough in February 2024 when he reached his first quarterfinal, semifinal, and final in Doha, which helped him break into the top 100. He achieved his career-high ranking of 48th in October 2024 after advancing to the quarterfinals of the ATP Masters 1000 Shanghai where he was defeated by Djokovic.

Mensik has had some notable victories in his career, including defeating former champions Andy Murray, Gael Monfils, and Andrey Rublev, to become the youngest Czech ATP Tour finalist. He also became the first player born in 2005 or later to reach an ATP Tour final. In his debut at the 2023 US Open, he reached the third round as a qualifier, making him the youngest player to reach the Grand Slam’s third round since Rafael Nadal at the 2004 Australian Open.
Although Mensik has more experience at the Challenger level, with a record of 30 wins and 21 losses, including winning his first title in Prague-2 in May 2023, he also qualified for his second tour-level event at the 2024 Australian Open. In the first round, he defeated former top 10 player Denis Shapovalov.
Mensik is one of two teenagers in the Auckland tournament, alongside Basavareddy. He is aiming to become the youngest man to win a match in Auckland since Shapovalov in 2018. In the previous week, Mensik reached the quarterfinals of the Brisbane tournament, where he was defeated by Mpetshi Perricard.
If Mensik secures a win in Auckland, he would become the fifth-youngest match winner in the tournament since 2000, being only 19 years and 4 months old. The previous youngest match winners include Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Denis Shapovalov, Marin Cilic, and Mikhail Youzhny.
The match between Pablo Carreno Busta and Jakub Mensik will take place on the Grandstand court.
